A number of concerned residents have formed the Woodham Walter Protection Group (WWPG) in response to the proposed 258‑acre solar development by Lightsource BP.

As spring unfolds across the village — hedgerows shifting from bare branches to bud and blossom, and fields returning to colourful life — it is a timely moment to reflect on the potential impact such a large‑scale development would have on our cherished landscape.

In anticipation of an imminent planning application, the group has undertaken significant work to prepare and represent the community. This includes providing input to the Neighbourhood Plan, launching this dedicated website which already has over 200 registered supporters, and raising awareness through leaflet distribution and Village News updates.

An initial fighting fund has been established to support ongoing activity, and professional planning consultants have been appointed. The group has carried out extensive research into solar developments nationwide — particularly those refused on appeal — to help inform our approach.

Connections have been made with an established action group in Suffolk that has experienced a similar process, providing valuable insight and guidance. Visualisations have been produced to illustrate the potential impact of the proposed development on local views and the rural character of our village.

WWPG has also engaged with MP Priti Patel and County Councillor Jane Fleming, receiving encouraging support.

What happens next and how you can help

  • A crowdfunding campaign will shortly be launched to support further work.
  • Residents are encouraged to register their interest via the website to stay informed.
  • When a planning application is submitted, guidance will be provided on how to respond to Maldon District Council. Timely and well‑informed individual responses will be important — broad community participation is encouraged.
